TEMPLE OF THE TOOTH

It is a well-known fact that a tooth of the Buddha is enshrined in the Sri Dalada Palace in the Mahanuwara Royal Palace complex in Sri Lanka and is a place of pilgrimage for Buddhists from all over the world. Sri Dalada Maliga is located in the royal palace complex of the old Kandy Kingdom where the Buddha Tooth Relic is enshrined.

The Bogambara lake in front of it also adds beauty to the Dalada Palace. Relics have played an important role in local politics since ancient times because whoever carries the relic is believed to rule the country. Today, it is recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Sri Dalada Palace is a fusion of architectural styles with Sri Lankan as well as South Indian influences and is one of the most famous places not only in Kandy but worldwide. Its white stone walls and golden canopies are particularly eye-catching. Specially when everyone is dressed respectably when it comes to hitting this one. Both genders must come dressed very modestly and no hats or shoes are allowed inside the palace. Among the many Buddhist temples in Sri Lanka, the most important is the Temple of Sri Dalada. We can also buy a lotus flowers at the entrance in front of the Temple of the Tooth.

                                                                           History

For travelers seeking culture and history, the Sri Dalada Maligava (Palace of the Tooth) is an unmissable destination.

The tooth relic was secretly brought from India to Ceylon by Prince Danta and Princess Hemamala, who hid it in the princess's hair to protect her from enemies. The Kingdom of Kandy became the last and safest home of Dalada during the Upland Kingdoms. The Temple of the Tooth Relic was built near the Kandy Lake to honor and protect the relic. Today it is one of the most sacred Buddhist temples in the world."

The Kandy Esala Perahera, which is Asia's greatest festival, is also held annually for Lord Dalada.

The Sri Dalada Palace is not just a place of worship . It is a living symbol of Sri Lanka's identity, faith and history.
