π The beginning of coffee cultivation in Sri Lanka
The history of Ceylon Coffee is longer than that of Ceylon Tea, which is a popular name around the world today.
π Coffee was introduced to Sri Lanka by the Arabs in 1503.
⚠️ In 1870, coffee cultivation was destroyed due to the spread of Coffee Rust disease.
π¦ Coffee Rust (Hemileia vastatrix) has spread for the first time in Sri Lanka.
π‘ British botanist Harry Marshall Ward found that the disease is spread by wind. To avoid this, he advised to grow different types of coffee.
π Later most of the farmers shifted to rubber and tea plantations.
πΏWith the destruction of coffee cultivation, farmers shifted to tea cultivation.
π Later, coffee cultivation was becoming popular again.
π³ As the scientists say, The coffee plant can have a lifespan of up to 100 years.
π€️Also fertile soil, moderate temperature, frequent rains and partial shade are suitable for this cultivation.
