The culture of Sri Lanka can be divided into main parts.
Colorful festivals in Sri Lanka
These festivals are one of the major tourist attractions. Religion plays an important role in shaping Sri Lankan culture and traditions. In Sri Lankan culture, religions are divided into Buddhism, Christianity, Hinduism, etc., and cultural festivals specific to each religion are celebrated. Some of them are Sinhala Tamil New Year festival , Thai Pongal Festival, Vesak Festival, Poson Festival, Christmas Festival.
Sri Lankan art
Upland, lowland, Sabaragamuwa dances, traditional dances as well as village dances show the beauty of the culture.The art of music unique to Sri Lankan culture, the art of painting from ancient times, and architectural areas. Both are cultural elements.
Food culture
Sri Lankan cuisine is unique among other countries because of the spices that are made in Sri Lanka. And many of the vegetables and fruits used in cooking are sometimes found only in Sri Lanka. Apart from the deliciousness of the food, it is very important for a very healthy lifestyle. Sri Lankan cuisine is famous for its spices and variety of dishes.
• Rice and curry (main course consists of rice served with various meat, fish and vegetable curries)
• Hopper (a bowl-shaped pancake made from fermented rice flour, often flavored with a spicy sambal)
• Indi hoppers (steamed rice noodles usually served with curries)
• Kottu roti (a popular street food made by mixing chopped roti with vegetables, eggs, and meat)
• Fish Sour Thiel (a sour fish curry flavored with gora and spices)
Ceylon tea, coffee, rubber cultivation
Sri Lanka's major tea producing crops are tea, coffee and rubber. These are also the crops that have the highest percentage of domestic production. This is a feature that even attracts tourists
education
Sri Lanka is one of the few countries that provide free education to children even up to higher education such as PhD degrees.
Sports
The national sport is volleyball, however, Sri Lanka excelled in winning the ICC World Cup in 1996 in cricket. Currently, there are handball, netball, football, cricket and many other sports in Sri Lanka. Water and motor sports have also become popular.
Traditional clothes
Traditional clothing in Sri Lanka varies by region and community. Osari, Sarama, Veshti, Salwar Kameez, Gown etc. can be taken as examples.
Social customs and manners
• Greetings (Traditional greetings include holding hands in a prayer-like gesture, saying “Hello” or “Vanakkam”)
• Respect for elders (elders are held in high esteem and younger people often seek their blessings)
• Hospitality (guests are warmly welcomed with a cup of tea or a meal, )
Also, the historical cities of Anuradhapura, Polonnaruwa and Kandy form a triangle that showcases Sri Lanka's cultural heritage.
The culture of Sri Lanka is a reflection of its ancient heritage, religious traditions and diverse ethnicities.
