UNIQUE TRADITIONAL DANCE πŸ’ƒ πŸ‡±πŸ‡°

Local dance is a very important part of Sri Lankan culture.

From time immemorial, dance has been used not only for entertainment, but also as a form of ritual, devotion, and emotional expression.

Even today, traditional dance is considered a high symbol of Sri Lankan culture.

There are three main traditional dance traditions in Sri Lanka.

  •  Upcountry dance tradition
  •  Lowland dance tradition
  •  Sabaragamu dance tradition

Each tradition has its own movements, costumes, drums and cultural background.

 Upland dance

Upland dance is popular in Udunuwara, Yatinuvara, Hewahata, Satkorale, Satarakorale etc.

Although it originated in Udara, today Udara dance is practiced all over the country.

Low country dances

Lowcountry dances originated in the southern part of the country.

This dance form also has its own identity as the upland dance style.

This tradition is mostly associated with rituals to cure supernatural figures such as demons and the dead.

Sabaragamu Dance

Sabaragamu dance started in Ratnapura where the shrine of Lord Sumana Saman is located.

This is popular in Ratnapura, Aheliyagoda, Kuruvita, Eratna etc.

The dance element is specific to rituals related to Lord Sumana Saman.

Main drum is the Daula

Sabaragamu dance is performed by both male and female dancers during rituals and ceremonies dedicated to the blessings of Lord Sumana Saman.

It is very important to preserve our traditional arts in the modern world. Sri Lankan indigenous dance should be respected and practiced among the youth. It is not just a performance on a stage but a living heritage of the nation. Let's protect the spirit of our culture through traditional dance.πŸ’ƒπŸ«ΆπŸ»πŸ’ž
